Horses & alpacas

Sunset Farm

Alpacas to walk with, have breakfast with and earn a licence for — and horses for everything from a first turn on a lead rein to a ride through the dunes.

The farm belongs to the sitejust behind the riding arena

Sunset Farm is our working farm on Fehmarn: surrounded by the island's landscape and an adjoining nature reserve, just behind the riding arena. This is where our alpacas, horses and ponies live, and all of them are glad of visitors who bring a bit of time with them. For animal lovers, families and groups, country life is right here at close quarters.

Everything can be booked, including by guests who have never sat on a horse or led an alpaca before. Only one thing matters: book beforehand. Turning up on the day doesn't work — the animals have their routine.

There's a conviction behind all of it: a close connection between people, animals and the landscape, thought through for the long term. We don't just want to offer a pleasant few hours, but also a sense of what the environment and animal welfare are worth — for grown-ups as much as for children.

Booking happens at sunset-farm.deand only there

The farm has its own website, and it's more than a business card: that's where the free slots are, where you book a walk, a breakfast, a riding lesson or a hack, and where every experience is described in full — with duration, price, minimum age and everything else you'd want to know beforehand.

It can't be done through this site. What you read here is the overview; the calendar hangs over there.

With the alpacasfour ways to get to know them

  • Alpaca walk

An unhurried walk with the animals through the fields and woods around the site. You lead your own alpaca on a rein. There's no pace anyone has to keep to.

  • Coffee with the alpacas

Coffee, cake and alpacas: you sit among the animals, they come over out of curiosity, and you enjoy their company at your leisure. For anyone who'd rather sit than walk.

  • Alpaca breakfast

Breakfast looking out over the herd. An exclusive experience for small parties, and not one you forget in a hurry.

  • Alpaca licence

You learn where the animals come from, what they eat, how to lead them properly and how to care for them. There's a certificate at the end — the best souvenir of the holiday.

  • Riding lessons

For beginners and experienced riders. If you can already ride, you brush up here; if you're starting out, you learn the basics calmly, on your own or in a group.

  • Hacks

Out into the landscape: along field tracks, past the nature reserves and with the Baltic in view.

  • Beach rides

The classic: along the dunes and across the natural beach. The experience most people come back for.

  • Leading ponies for the smallest

The guided mini round on a pony, for children and for anyone sitting on a horse for the first time. An adult walks alongside and the child sets the pace.

The farm festival is the high point of the season: stroking animals, riding and being a farmer for a day. Dates are in the weekly programme.

From our own herdalpaca wool and more

Alongside the animal experiences, the farm sells a small selection of products made from alpaca wool. The wool from our own animals is worked by hand: into soft duvets, into wool for knitting and crafting, and into our alpaca soap.

They make unusual souvenirs that keep the visit in mind for a long time, and they fit what the farm stands for: kind to the environment, from the region, from our own herd.
